Aspelviertel - Rural Living with Tradition

The Aspel forms the diagonal section in Prima Colonia. It connects Cologne city centre with the district of Cologne-Widderdorf and continues to Brauweiler and into the Erftkreis. Due to its groups and rows of trees, the Aspel encourages you to stroll and spend some time, and shapes the Prima Colonia area.
The name goes back to Irmgard von Aspel, who is revered in Cologne as the founder of monasteries, churches and charitable institutions. Her name is also derived from the aspen tree, a type of poplar that is especially widespread at the Lower Rhine, in the river meadows and rural hamlets, and which still dominates the village landscape today.
The Aspel quarter has therefore been laid out as a village-type, traditional, garden-city settlement with small squares at street junctions and comfortable neighbourhoods. The green meadowlands are very inviting. The houses adopt the traditional building style with its gabled roofs and white façades and exude a cosy, neighbourly lifestyle feeling with traditional values: The garden bench in front of the house, colourful green hedges, doorways surrounded by roses and colourfully-planted country gardens.
